You don’t need a gallery wall, an expensive collection or a degree in art history to make art part of your life. Sometimes, it starts with a postcard propped beside the kettle or a picture that makes you pause on your way upstairs.
We started Libby & Alice Mail Club because we both love art—and love sharing the things we discover. For us, the pleasure is in living with it: noticing a colour, looking closely at a flower, finding a picture you want to keep.
Here are a few simple ways to bring more of that pleasure into your day.
Put art where you’ll actually see it
Think about the places you spend time. Your desk, the kitchen shelf, the bedside table. A small print in one of these spots can give you something lovely to look at during an ordinary moment.
You don’t have to frame everything immediately, either. Prop a postcard against a stack of books, use a little wooden card holder or clip a print above your workspace.
Start with one picture you enjoy and somewhere you’ll see it often.
Let the seasons change your pictures
Changing a few small pieces of art is a lovely way to welcome a new season.
You might choose fresh botanical illustrations in spring, bright flowers in summer, rich autumn leaves as the evenings draw in, and snowy landscapes for winter.
Keep your favourites in a folder and bring them out again when the mood takes you. There’s something comforting about rediscovering a picture you loved last year.
Spend five minutes with one artwork
We see so many images each day that it’s easy to move past them without really looking.
Choose one picture and give it a little time. Notice the colours first. Then look at the shapes, the background and the smallest details.
What drew you to it? Where does your eye keep returning? Is there something you missed at first?
You don’t need to arrive at a clever interpretation. Simply looking is enough.
Follow your own taste
Perhaps you love delicate wildflowers, dramatic landscapes or Japanese prints. Perhaps you’re drawn to pictures of birds, unfamiliar places or rooms you’d like to step inside.
Pay attention to those preferences. You don’t need to choose what seems fashionable or what you think an art lover ought to like.
A collection becomes personal through the small choices you make over time.
Take art out into the world
Visit a local exhibition, browse a second-hand bookshop or stop to look at a mural you usually walk past.
If a gallery feels overwhelming, choose just a few works to spend time with. You don’t have to see every room or read every label.
A postcard from the gallery shop can become a little reminder of your visit—or a thoughtful piece of post for someone else.
Share a picture with a friend
Art gives us a lovely reason to connect.
Send a postcard because its colours reminded you of someone. Include a small print with a birthday letter. Share a picture and ask, “Would you put this on your wall?”
It can be as simple as saying, “I saw this and thought you’d love it.”
Give yourself something beautiful to open
There’s a particular pleasure in holding an artwork, choosing where it will go and returning to it throughout the month.
That’s the idea behind Libby & Alice Mail Club: carefully chosen art, lovely stationery and a letter from us, arriving through your letterbox.
Open your envelope with a cup of tea. Find your favourite piece. Give it a little place in your home.
Discover Libby & Alice Mail Club and bring a little more art into your month.
