Often called “the Raphael of flowers,” Redouté was a Belgian botanical artist whose exquisite illustrations became beloved across Europe in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Working for French royalty, including Marie Antoinette and later Empress Joséphine, Redouté developed a remarkable ability to blend scientific accuracy with breathtaking artistry.
His most famous work, Les Roses, published between 1817 and 1824, remains one of the most celebrated botanical collections ever created. Each rose was painted with extraordinary precision — every petal, thorn, leaf, and bud carefully observed and lovingly rendered. Yet despite this detail, his roses never feel clinical. They feel alive.
That is what draws us to Redouté.
